I’m Talkin’ Games!

So you may have noticed that my posting has slowed down here a little bit.  That’s because I’ve joined Br3ntbr0 over at I’m Talkin’ Games! or ITG!

I’m excited to join a multi-author blog.  Some of my favorite blogs (I’m looking at you, KTR) are multi-author and I’m hoping that some day we can get the quality and consistency they get.  We’ve got a couple of newer bloggers to the circle I usually run in, along with old friends Oakstout and JoBildo contributing.

I’m going to keep this blog open, because I know that there are going to be things I want to say here.  Please set your readers and feeds to http://imtalkingames.com as well.  I’d love to see you all over there too.  We’ve got some exciting things planned there.  I’ll let you head over there and see for yourself.

Thanks!

I’m baaaack

Hey everyone, I’ve missed talking to you over the last few months as I worked through some things and have been trying to get some things in order.  I have missed pontificating and keeping track of everything that has been going on in the industry.

So I’m back.  Be careful what you ask for…

Returning Soon

For those of you that are wondering where I’ve been, there have been a lot of things going on over the last couple of months.  Unfortunately, that meant that the blogging took a hit.

I’ve still got some things to say, so please keep coming back here.  I’ll get started just like old times in a week or two.

Grouchy will be Writing Again Soon

Hey everyone, been busy with family obligations and haven’t really been playing any MMO’s.  I have been shoehorning in TF2 whenever I can for my game play fix.  I’ll get back to writing in a few days.  My kids will be ending their summer visit and work is slowing down enough that I can read and comment more effectively.

Thanks for dropping by, keep your eye out here.  This has been a lull, not a shutdown.

Gaming Time Limited? Options Still Out There

During the early summer months, my gaming time (and writing time as well as you can see) is usually severely limited because of a change in priorities.  Namely, my children are here for their annual summer visit.  While I can’t play AoC for hours like I was, I can still get in some gaming here and there.  Here’s what I’ve been up to.

Mario Kart Wii

It’s probably not quite as good as the GameCube edition of the game, but it’s dang close. In my book that still makes it one of the 10 best video games ever.  I can’t tell you how much enjoyment my family and I have derived from this franchise.  All ages seem to be able to enjoy it and there is actually a higher level of understanding that you can gain that gives it the depth that most adult gamers require for their enjoyment.  Been playing a lot of this.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from The Grouchy One

Hey all,

Just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the blessings of a wonderful holiday to you and your family.  The whole family is at Chez Grouchy for the holidays and it always makes me less, um, grouchy.  I hope it has the same effect on you and yours.

See you in a couple of days!  Be safe if you are traveling and even if you aren’t.

I’m An Idiot

When you work in high tech, sometimes it’s even harder than usual to admit you are an idiot, technically.  I’ve been so excited to get this blog going.  I’ve had articles that I wanted to write and things I wanted to say.  But I couldn’t get into my own blog.

Because. I’m. An. Idiot.

Just so you know, user names in WordPress are case-sensitive.  I turned in my old work computer with the user name saved and on my new computer, I couldn’t log in.  This ends the self-embarrasment section of the blog today.

This isn’t a personal blog, so I am loathe to bore you with stories from my personal life.  That being said (you know what is coming next) I wanted to tell you all about a sea-change in my life.  I’ve been traveling for the last 2.5 years on business for my company as a trainer for our software product.  I was lucky enough to be able to visit 41 states, 5 foreign countries, including 5 Canadian provinces.  I’ve helped customers and understood their english or a little of their french, spanish, or german on trips outside the US (eine alt bier, bitte.)  I’ve flown countless thousand miles and stayed at innumerable hotels.  This week, I started in a new role for the company that requires no travel.  I’m testing our software internally now, and I’m very excited to be back at home.  Hopefully I won’t wear out my welcome here.

I’ll get rolling again on the blog tonight, now that I have figured out how to post again.  We’ll see you online soon!

Welcome to Our New Site!

Greetings everyone.

I decided that I was going to make a new commitment to the blog. In order to do that I wanted to make sure it was the blog that I wanted, feature and appearance-wise.

I am hosting this on my own and have made the break from Blogger. If you have found this you are probably already a reader. Please take a moment to register and have a look around. This site will have some nice features as I learn the software and hopefully you will find it a more pleasant experience and a spot where you can contribute.

I haven’t copied all the old comments from the original blog, so please visit grouchygamer.blogspot.com and have a look there for the comments until I have a chance to do so.

See you here online!

Change of Direction Here

As I’ve started to blog, I’ve noticed that in the blogosphere, the blogs I enjoy most are the ones that are written from the perspective of the industry in general, then specifics within the industry, then about specific games. In that order.

So what I’ve decided to do is to follow my interests a little more broadly, and make sure that this blog isn’t just going to be about Sigil, SOE, and Vanguard. I’d like for the blog to be read, although that isn’t the only reason I write here. The process is cathartic for me as well.

Going forward, I’m hoping to comment on the industry in general, community relations, community management, and the “next generation” of games in the pipeline. I’m most interested to see what becomes of Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, and whatever the guys over at 38 Studios (formerly Green Monster Games) are up to.

Thanks to all of you who have put this extremely humble blog on the map, even if it’s only a pin-sized mark so far. I hope to earn your interest and participation as we go along.

As an aside, I have had the opportunity to visit London this week on a business trip, and I had a little slack time to enjoy the city. If you haven’t visited the UK, or London in particular, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s expensive (it makes Manhattan and Disney World seem like a bargain) but it’s an amazing and vibrant city. Of the cities in the world that I have visited, it’s horned it’s way closest to my heart and I can’t wait until my next visit.

Here is a picture I took today, just one of many but I thought this was beautiful. It’s a crest that is on the gate at Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s London residence. The city is full of amazing history and art. I’m starting to ramble, but if you ever get the chance, visit London and the UK.

I Heard You Missed Me, I’m Baaaack

OK summer is over, my insane travel schedule is over for the year, my guild in WoW has hit a wall that the leadership seems too dense to get over (and I sure as hell don’t need another responsibility right now, so I’m not volunteering to help,) and the lion’s share of my background work is done for setting up some of the web stuff for my Vanguard Site and my other, unannounced, MMO site.

So what, you say? Well I’ll be back here starting to write again, and I’ll be working on the Vanguard site pretty diligently. I’m also going to start a podcast. Evidently, I don’t have enough responsibilities to ignore at the moment.

Please stay tuned in the coming weeks and months. My writers block feels like it’s gone, the site is ready to be built upon, and I have a lot of things to talk about.

Thanks for visiting here, and I hope to see you around a lot in the future.

Thanks!
Genda

Sorry for the ad content….

Hey everyone,

I’m aware of the gold/farmer ads on the blog, and I’m working to get them off the site for good, but you have to delete each one from Google adsense individually, and they take up to 24 hours each. Over the next few weeks, hopefully we’ll get them all off and have something else to click over to that is more interesting.

Thanks for your understanding,
Genda

Welcome to Grouchy Gamer

I need an outlet. You see, I could post on my usual spots, like the Official Vanguard Forum, or I could post on my fan site, VanguardCrafters.com. Of course, since the fansite is an affiliate site, I need to be on my official behavior. Well, most of the time. Still, I find myself wanting to rant, or to make a point where it might not be acceptable to post on one of the more “official” sites.

Enter Blogger.

I’ve resisted the whole blog phenomenon so far, mostly because I thought “who the hell would be interested in what I have to say, and what makes these egomaniacs think anyone is interested in what they are saying?” More and more, I’m finding myself surfing and perusing blogs though, as a way of getting real, instead of “official,” information. Some of it is horse shit, of course. Some of the blogs have some really thoughtful and insightful content.

I can’t promise you that mine will. I can promise you that if you read this, I’ll be straight with you. If I can. I’m still, as a fan site operator, bound by NDA, and I can’t spill beans here that I can’t spill elsewhere. What I can do is give you opinions and pass along interesting rumors and things I’ve heard.

I hope you find it useful.
