The Grouchy Gamer

Yeah, I'm cranky. That's kinda the point...

Vanguard Crafters is Closed

Since March of 2005, Vanguard Crafters has been operated by me or by other volunteers to serve the community and the developers in Vanguard and the associated crafting community.  I have not been actively involved in it’s operation for quite some time.  The amount of link spam and the attacks on the wiki recently,  paired with the decline in the size of the Vanguard community have led me to the difficult decision to shut it down.

If we are all honest with each other, the site is a shell of it’s former self, and the amount of effort by unpaid volunteers to keep it up has become unconscionable to ask for.

I want to apologize to those of you who still used the site.  I know there are a loyal few.  Please understand that the whole episode is very heartbreaking for those of us in the community that had hoped that Vanguard would succeed.

I’ve temporarily redirected the site’s traffic here for an explanation.  I’ll be taking this down and shuttering the site permanently in the coming weeks.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed over there over the last 5 years.  I’m really sorry I let you all down in the end, but it was very much fun while it lasted.  Best of luck to all of you and many happy loot drops!

  1. Oh NOOOO! that’s not true =(((
I really loved the site and used it every day…
if there’s a possibility to keep the infos of the wiki section (f.e. on DVD), please let me know, I even would pay for it!

  2. Feh, no letdown. Sh*t happens, games come and go, and their associated websites sometimes have to go too. For my money you did a great job with it while it lasted (even if I haven’t visited VGC in many years myself :D ).

  3. Sorry to hear that the site is no more, Genda. I just want to say it was a GREAT site in its day. Something you can be proud of.

  4. Would you be willing to let someone else host it as a static?

  5. Is there a way perhaps to get a copy of the Wiki ? As the Crafting Officer of TASC, the loss of this particular resource is a serious blow, not to mention the loss of so many hours of folks work.
If not, I totally understand. We will just have to rebuild out of the ashes.

Thank you so much for all the work you put into VGC it was, for crafters, THE resource that adventurers lacked. Solid dependable information. my thanks and happy travels.

  6. Only problem is… it doesn’t redirect here, it redirects to worldofwarcraft.com :p
There were a lot of us asking today in the craft channel if VG Crafters got hacked, heh.

  7. Though I totally understand your reasons for closing this page I gotta say: I’ll be completely lost without it!!! How will I find the right trainer and stuff?! I have no sense of orientation whatsoever!^^ I just wish I’d known sooner so I could have copied some of the more crucial information…
Anyway… Thank you so much for this page as long as it existed – it was the first place to look when beeing lost in crafting… ;-)

  8. was the wiki located on your site as well? … and if it is is there any way you would be able to put up the info and have somebody take over the site for you if they would want to. There was a lot of information on the site. It would be a shame for that to be gone for good.

  9. I’m sorry to see this site close. It’s been enormously useful and I’m glad I was able to save some of the forum info. I will miss the wiki most especially for Banisher line and the tables of powders and their individual effects. I’ll be going old EQ style on this one and having to write it all down in a notebook so I can remember the next time I get have to make a piece. Thank you for maintaining it for so long for those of us that came to VG late and continue to hang in there and play.

  10. Damn. I just got back into the crafting thing too. LOL

I understand. Was wondering how long things would last. :(

I am with some of the other commenters here. If there is any way to get the information on the wiki somehow, I’d like to know. It’s a huge resource, and while there may have been issues, it would be sad to see all the time that’s gone into it be lost.

  11. I agree, it was a wonderful site, I too would be willing to pay to get it back up, or if you would allow it back up for a week or so , so we could also copy some important imformation, would pay for that too, yes im a sad addicted to your site case. Please let me know if its possible, thanks tons, for all you have done with the site.

  12. Your information from the site was helpfull for many. What you saw as an old shell, was really one the best site existing. (that I have been able to find).

I too am interested in keeping all the hard work you and your team put into the site. (you have my email, let me know how I can help to keep all that good information alive).

Now, knowing that you had to defened againest attackes – it is understandable that it is time.

Thank you for all the time and effort from when the site was up.

  13. PLEASE for the love of all us crafters, make the wiki database available somehow so we can host it on our own. I need it on almost a daily basis.. and my web server is bored anyways =^.^=

  14. Hey guys, thanks for the well wishes. I appreciate that many of you have offered to host or distribute the information in the site and the wiki. I want you all to know that I will definitely consider it. It’s not something to be taken lightly as there are privacy concerns and other pressing issues when sharing any database. I’m telling you guys this so you know that I may be inclined to do it, but it’s going to take a very particular set of circumstances for that to happen. I’m not at liberty to just “give” anyone the wiki.

Also, please understand that I’m not saying this as a jumping off point for discussion about it, but rather to let you in on my thought process.

Ashjete, who has been valiantly trying to keep the wiki functional for some time now will probably also be happy to tell you how difficult that is in the face of service and spam attacks and that it’s not a small responsibility just to keep it functional, let alone updated.

So please be patient. I’m not going to make any decisions this week for sure. But I appreciate knowing that there are those out there who got benefit from the site and that so many of you feel so strongly about it.

I’ll check back with you all in a bit.

  15. The crafting community has honestly been at a loss for the last few days w/out VGCrafters…not joking, & we absolutely appreciate EVERYTHING you and your team have done keeping the site up for this long. Any way we can get at the info even if it’s just for 24hrs so we could gather some of the root work that was added in by so many would be greatly appreciated.

  16. Your site was an invaluable source of information for those of us who are NOT ready to give up on Vanguard. :) I fully understand your decision though but if there was some way you could pass on administration to someone else or even just repost the site for say a few days so those of us in need could print out what info we forsee needing it would be greatly appreciated. I can’t even imagine the work that went into the site and it seems to me to be a shame to just throw it all away instead of passing the reins.
Please remember those of us who are lost in crafting oblivion when you make your decision on what to finally do.

  17. I would like to chime in and say it would be nice if you could give the wiki data to someone else to at least put up on another page. I understand the site was a headache to run. It’s a shame, really, that it’s gone because I just came back to the game myself and I’m lost all over again as to what to do.
