Yeah, I'm cranky. That's kinda the point...

Warhammer Quickly to 500K Users

In an article on Kotaku today, it’s been announced that Warhammer Online has surpassed the 500K subscribers mark.  This is a great start for the game, indeed.  Now, we all know that they aren’t going to retain all of that half mil, so how the game is going to perform from a subscriber count perspective is now up to how well the gameplay is received.  From my observations, the servers as they are could mostly benefit from an increase in populations.

According to Mark Jacobs of Mythic, this makes WAR the fastest-starting MMO in history;

In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life.

Having a quick start never hurts in teh subsciption world, but with MMO’s the rubber really meets the road 4-6 months down the line and beyond.  Does WAR have staying power?  I think the jury is still out on that.  Only time will tell.

Congratulations to Mythic on a successful launch though.  Stability has been pretty good and the bugs are of a relatively small number.  There still need to be a lot of client side fixes, and I’m hoping that they are incoming soon.  Nothing is too broken but a lot of things could certainly use some love.

I’ll follow the numbers the best I can and let you know what’s happening.  I’d like to see the game get to a million subs, if for no other reason to see what the game play is like with that much population.

Stay tuned.

  1. Well, at least its SUBSCRIBERS and not BOXES SHIPPED! Off to a good start!

  2. I’m pretty sure there are a lot more people who bought the game but were unable to play because a lot of the CD’s shipped were faulty. And, a lot of people just aren’t the type to go to the official website to get the fix.

    However, the game rocks, and I’m sure the numbers will bounce back.

  3. If I remember didn’t their “boxes shipped” come in around 1.5 million or something like that? I actually prefer to know the boxes shipped over the subscribers during the first month after release. After all can you really say you have any subscribers if everyone is still on their first month of free play?

    Now come November and December I’ll get real interested in that subscriber statistic.

  4. Not to mention that Wrath of the Lich King is due out not long after people’s free 30 days expire. With the economy tanking, lots of people may not be able to float more than one game at a time, which may not be the best news for Warhammer. If this game ends up failing to thrive, I think that says something significant about the longevity of the MMO phenomenon and will affect company’s willingness to spend the big bucks on developing epic MMO games.
