Yeah, I'm cranky. That's kinda the point...

WAR Buzz Becomes Tangible

War Pre-OrderThere is a beta for WAR, and I am in that beta.

That’s all the detail that my NDA allows me to disclose.  If you are wondering why I haven’t been writing much lately other than the fact that I’ve had a busy home life, it’s because I can’t write about what interests me most at the moment. It’s actually all I’m playing right now.  I’ve even gotten off of TF2, save times when they are doing something that keeps me from logging in.

I’ve now gone past the “anticipating a new game” stage to the “excited about the new game stage.

I’m not the only one. The blogs are alive with stories about the game and what people think it will be.  Tobold is expecting to get conned again by a developer that ships a game with only low-level content.  Many bloggers are risking their beta status with small leaks defending Mythic and the game from some claims.  NDA is probably coming off in a few days, per Mark Jacobs.  Our bloggers guild, casualtiesguild.com, has shown much more interest than I had anticipated.  The site has had over 500 posts in the last day and a half. Up from zero, because that site has only been up for 36 hours or so.

So be forewarned that my point of view is going to be skewed in the coming weeks, and you can probably expect to hear a lot from me about WAR.  A LOT of other blogs will be writing about WAR as well.  Some of them willprobably be game journals with information about their experiences.  Some will be about other aspects of the game.  I’m going to try to keep the focus here as I have with others in the past.  In other words, I’ll try to keep a high-level, general overall perspective on it.  I’ll probably do some analysis of it at a business level.  But expect it to occupy my thoughts.

I haven’t really allowed myself to get too excited about anything since the whole Vanguard thing threw up on my shoes.  If you don’t know, I operate a Vanguard fansite, and that whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth.  I was also the one who broke the story about Brad McQuaid not being there for his people in crunch time.  (Google Brad McQuaid, the story is the second one after his wikipedia entry.)  It’s still the most-read story on my blog(s).  (that link is to my former host on blogger, I self-host the blog now.)  This game has been on my radar since I was lucky enough to get (sneak) in to a presentation about it at E3 2006.  Now it’s coming to fruition.

What has me so excited?  I can’t say (see paragraph #1).  I think a lot of people are going to be excited, and for good reason.  What are the reasons?

Watch this space, the guild site, pre-order a copy, and find out.  For now;

Stay Tuned.

  1. It sounds like I might be in beta next week. That’s when they’re supposedly letting in the people with CE pre-orders.

I ended up canceling my pre-order to switch the money over to Fable 2 (I want both games, but I decided to give WAR some months to mature before I buy it), but I had already entered my pre-order code. Hopefully, that doesn’t cheat anyone out of that slot, but it’s not something I planned. Anyway, I expect the code will still work and I’ll be let in with the CE crowd. If not, maybe I’ll get into the open beta.

I’m really looking forward to it. But there’s so many great games coming out between now and spring that I had to prioritize. And the recent changes in WAR seem big enough that I expect they’ll need more than just a couple months to work out the kinks.

  2. I’ve been following WAR for quite a long time now. I have faith in Mythic so hopefully this game will deliver. And of course, I’m still not in beta which seems to be my luck on these sorts of things. I have a CE pre-order though, so there is still hope for me.

I still log into VanguardCrafters now and then, just to see what’s happening. I wonder what WAR will do to that game…

  3. It’s a Burfo sighting!

Good to see you bud. Jump over to the guild site and hang out with us!

  4. They need to lift that NDA soon or many people I know (myself included) are going to asplode!!!11oneone!

  5. I can’t wait. I haven’t been this excited for an MMOG since the EQ2/WoW release 4 years ago. Good times ahead.

  6. I feel the same way. I’m sooo scared too, because there can still be any of 100 things that can go wrong to turn a new MMO sour, regardless of the developer behind it or all the great design decision or innovation that they bring in with their new game. I fear class imbalance, new bugs that go far too long w/o being addressed properly, design corrections that wind up making things worse, etc. I’m 100% behind WAR and loving this MMO, but the fear is still there. We all have a Vanguard or SWG story, in our MMO past…I will be just terribly deflated if something like that happens with WAR.

  7. We do all have VG and SWG stories, but thinking back on those, I’m pretty sure there was a little voice at the back of my head going “jebus, this SO ain’t ready.” For myself, I’m not hearing that right now.

Games are, it seems, GOING to launch before they’re ready now. I think it’s inevitable, as consumer expectations and development cycle increase — there’s only so long you can tell your investors that you need more time before you can hit the shelves.

Funny thing is, I resisted (strongly) getting excited about this for as long as I could. I just about ignored WAR until I got the beta invite, on purpose, based on previously burned experience.

But now, I’m just excited. :D
